The Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 (HMA) is the principal statute governing the marriage, judicial separation, divorce and related matters of Hindus in India. It applies to Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs, and to any other person who is not a Muslim, Christian, Parsi or Jew by religion.
The act runs to roughly 30 sections, organised into 6 chapters covering the preliminary provisions and definitions, the conditions and ceremonies for a valid Hindu marriage, restitution of conjugal rights and judicial separation, nullity of marriage and divorce, jurisdiction and procedure of the courts hearing matrimonial matters, and savings and repeals.
