Trial of offences under the Indian Penal Code and other laws
AI Assist
Summary
All offences under the Indian Penal Code are to be investigated, inquired into, tried and otherwise dealt with according to the Code of Criminal Procedure. Offences under other laws are also governed by the same procedure, except where that other law specifically prescribes a different manner or place for investigation, inquiry or trial. In short, the CrPC is the default criminal procedure unless a special enactment overrides it.
Example
Ravi is accused of shop theft and an FIR is registered at the local police station. Because theft is an IPC offence, the police will investigate and any trial will proceed under the Code of Criminal Procedure.
