Summary

Concealing a former marriage from the person you later marry makes the act an offence. When someone contracts a subsequent marriage without disclosing an earlier marriage to the new spouse, they can be punished with imprisonment for up to ten years and also fined.

Example

Rohan had married Meera earlier but did not tell Priya, whom he later married. When Priya reports the earlier marriage, Rohan can be prosecuted and, if convicted, face up to ten years' imprisonment and a fine.
