Information as to commission of offences
AI Assist
Summary
A magistrate or police officer cannot be forced to say where they got information about an offence. The same protection applies to a Revenue officer for offences against the public revenue. It applies when the officer is questioned in proceedings or otherwise, so the source of the information can be kept confidential.
Example
Priya reports a break-in at her shop and tells the police who act on a neighbour's tip. In court the defence asks the police where the information came from. The officer cannot be compelled to disclose the source, so the neighbour's identity can remain secret.
