Summons to produce document or other thing
AI Assist
Summary
When a court or the officer in charge of a police station needs a document or other thing for an investigation, inquiry, trial or other proceeding, it can summon the person believed to have it to attend and produce it at a stated time and place. The officer may instead issue a written order to produce the item. A person may comply by causing the document or thing to be produced without personally attending. The rule does not affect certain evidence laws or apply to items held by postal or telegraph authorities.
Example
Priya files an FIR at her local police station saying jewellery went missing from her shop. The officer thinks CCTV footage on Ravi's shop computer is needed and issues a written order to Ravi to produce the footage at the station on a given date. Ravi can comply by sending a copy of the footage instead of coming in person, and that will be treated as compliance.
