Assault or criminal force on grave provocation

If a person assaults or uses criminal force in response to grave and sudden provocation given by the same person, the law treats the offence as less severe. The offender can be punished with simple imprisonment for up to one month, or a fine up to Rs 200, or both. The provocation must be sudden and serious and come from the person assaulted.

Priya shouts serious insults at Ravi during an argument. In sudden anger, Ravi pushes Priya. Because the provocation was grave and sudden and came from Priya, Ravi may be punished with up to one month simple imprisonment or a fine up to Rs 200, or both.
