Effectiveness in India of registration

A motor vehicle registered in any State does not need to be registered again elsewhere in India. The registration certificate issued under this Act is valid throughout India. This is subject to any other provisions of the Act that may provide otherwise.

Example

Priya moves her car, which is registered in Karnataka, to Maharashtra for work. She does not have to re-register the car in Maharashtra; her Karnataka registration certificate remains effective across India.

Enacted text

Subject to the provisions of section 47, a motor vehicle registered in accordance with this Chapter in any State shall not require to be registered elsewhere in India and a certificate of registration issued or in force under this Act in respect of such vehicle shall be effective throughout India.
