AI Assist
Summary
A complainant or witness on the way to court cannot be forced to accompany a police officer, be unnecessarily restrained or inconvenienced, or made to give security other than their own bond. If they refuse to attend or to execute a bond as directed in section 170, the police may forward them in custody to the magistrate, who may detain them until the bond is executed or the hearing ends.
Example
Priya is going to court to give evidence about a neighbour dispute. The police cannot force her to travel with an officer or detain her for convenience; she may go on her own and only needs to give her own bond. If Priya refuses to attend or to sign the bond as directed in section 170, the station officer may send her in custody to the magistrate, who can detain her until she signs the bond or the hearing ends.
