Fractions of terms of punishment

When calculating fractional parts of a punishment, life imprisonment is treated as equal to twenty years. Any fraction (half, one-third, remission, or other proportional calculation) of a life term is worked out from a 20-year baseline. This gives a fixed-year equivalent for computing reductions or related sentencing math.

Arjun is sentenced to life, and the court orders a reduction to one-half of the term. For calculation the life term is taken as 20 years, so his reduced sentence becomes 10 years.
