AI Assist
Summary
If a person is imprisoned only because they did not pay a fine, that imprisonment ends as soon as the fine is paid or is levied by legal process. In other words, either paying the fine yourself or having authorities recover it by lawful procedure terminates the jail term.
Example
Karan cannot pay a traffic fine and the court orders imprisonment in default of payment. Two days later Karan arranges the money and pays the fine, and his imprisonment ends immediately.
Bare Act
Enacted textThe imprisonment which is imposed in default of payment of a fine shall terminate whenever that fine is either paid or levied by process of law.
