“India”

For this Code, 'India' means the whole country but does not include the State of Jammu and Kashmir. When an act or offence occurs in Jammu and Kashmir it falls outside the Code's territorial scope, so the Code's provisions and punishments do not automatically apply there.

Priya takes a phone from a shop in Srinagar. Because 'India' for the Code excludes the State of Jammu and Kashmir, the Penal Code would not apply to that act there unless a specific law makes it applicable.
